Introducing a big text about how much I love Scandinavian Studies

If I had but one word with which to introduce myself, my interests, passions, and ambitions it would be this: ‘people’. Because of people, I love literature and philosophy – as only through these mediums can we learn what, and how, people think. ‘People’ is also why I am fascinated by religion and mythology – for how else can we truly discover what people believe, and hence, what they need? It is ‘people’ which lead me to be intrigued by history, exploring why are we how we are today, and to geography, which lets us see how we live within and affect our surroundings. Music tells us how people feel; art, how they perceive – and often, both show how they want to change the world. I am an avid follower of politics and current affairs, which tell us what people desire, and what they are prepared to do to achieve their goals.

All of which brings me to language, the one key to the many doors into the human psyche. In learning a language, I don’t seek to memorize phrases with the sole aim of successfully ordering starters in a foreign land. I think that what a languages degree can offer me is more than that: it is a chance to explore another culture and another society; its successes and its downfalls. Knowing that the Scandinavian welfare model is widely accepted to be the best in the world is not enough for me. I want to know why it is so successful, what the historical run-up is to make it so, and how it can be applied elsewhere. I found it very significant and interesting that, in reading a book titled ‘Medieval Scandinavian Armies (1) 1100-1300’, I had only to turn to the second page before learning that one distinctive feature of Scandinavian armies was ‘the mutual respect which [different social classes] showed to one another; the arrogance of the supposedly typical feudal knight was totally absent’, and it is surely not insignificant that Iceland can proudly call itself the oldest, longest-running modern democracy in the world. Could this be why all five Scandinavian countries came out in the top ten of the Gender Equality Index of 2008, with Sweden even topping the chart? And is this also why the number one spot of the Human Development index has been held by Norway since 2002, only to be claimed by Iceland in 2007? Crucially, in my opinion, is this why Denmark was recently found to be the ‘Happiest Country in the World’?

One of my main interest areas is the environment: ice caps are melting, oil stores are being depleted, forests are being razed, whole species of plant and animal are disappearing, and mountains of landfill are reaching to the skies, but too many people seem not to know… or if they do, care. Some of the primary exports of Norway, Sweden and Finland are timber, oil and fish – one imagines deforestation, oil spills and the extinction of marine wildlife. But it is Sweden who is closest on the way to carbon neutrality by 2050, and Oslo has recently implemented buses run on biomethane – the gas made by human excrement – and its energy for central heating is extracted from the same source. Charming as that may sound, it is without doubt an innovative scheme. In addition, last year’s Arctic Frontiers Conference was held by Norway’s Tromsø University, Denmark and Norway were two of the five countries which banded together to save the polar bear, and Denmark is 2009’s Organic Nation of the Year.

I could go on, but I needn’t.

Norway gave us our mistletoe, Sweden our furniture, Denmark our pastries, and Iceland – well, Iceland gave us Björk, Snorri Sturlusson and the first ever homosexual leader of a nation. The fact is there are few countries which can truly claim to be as well-rounded members of this world as the Scandinavian countries are, and yet there are few countries (in the Western scheme of things) which are so overlooked – when do they ever make headlines? The last time was probably when Iceland experienced its tragic financial crash last autumn. I think that this fascinating society whose foundations are laid in peace, equality and good cheer can offer me everything that I need; and in return, I wish to offer it all that I can. Studying Scandinavian Studies will help me do that.

In other news, I post more often here: barefootfiona.blogspot.com
25 things... That's a lot

So I got tagged on Facebook to do this thing, and I got a bit carrie away. You have to write 25 thigns about yourself, and most people wrote about 25 lines. I wrote about 90, and It took me well over an hour. Still, it was fun to write, particularily the pits post-19. I've been wanting to put that into words for ages.

1. I have weird size feet (varies from 4½ to 6 ½) and I think they’re both different shapes.

2. Because of the above, I go barefoot as often as possible – in St James Park, on the way to my music lesson… just not in shops, in public transport or in school. Hence my internet-wide username, barefootfiona.

3. When there’s a form to fill in, I say I’m a Vegetarian when I’m really not.

4. It’s just that I don’t like the taste of meat most of the time, though I’m OK with sausages and pâté. I love haggis and black pudding.

5. I’m half Scottish, half German. 50%. ½. Not English, not Irish, not Welsh, not American, not Canadian, not Italian (and yes, I have been asked that)… not even German. I am one part German, and one part Scottish. Get it right.

6. I am a nerdfighter. Are you? You do don’t know? What is a nerdfighter, you ask? To quote a fellow citizen from nerdfighteria, ‘A nerdfighter is a person that is rather than being made of skin cells and tissues, is made completely of AWESOME. It’s all in the videos. Just go watch them.’ (www.brotherhood2.com )

7. I’ve had a squint in my right eye since I was wee, and it’s got considerably worse in the past decade or so. Chances are, I’m going to have an eye operation sometime this year…

8. … and get two weeks off school for it!

9. I'm tea-total. Since I can’t have a decent argument about it (I always lose), it’s basically because I don’t want to – the bad points outweigh the good, FOR ME. I’m not gonna force my morals on you, don’t worry.

10. Depressing fact: I get a pseudo-depression every autumn, and it lasts two to five months. I don’t know why. It started in 2004. It sucks.

11. I love languages and grammar, and I would say I speak 3.5. (In order of goodness: English, German, French, Norwegian)

12. I want to learn Inuktitut, Swedish, Icelandic, Faroese, Danish, Scottish Gaelic, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Finnish, Arabic, Sanskrit, Japanese and Aleut.

13. I love Scandinavia, though I’ve never been. I <s>want to live there in the </s>– no, scratch that. I WILL live there in the future.

14. My dream job is author, and has been for as long as I can remember. It doesn’t even have to be fiction – I’d be totally happy writing research papers or books about etymology or whatever.

15. I write songs and I’ve been in loads of bands, though the band I was in first is the only one I’m really still in (if you don’t count the Huffleduffers). I don’t think we’ve ever kept the same name for more than one concert, and only two of our five members were in the band when I joined, and that’s including me. We all get on really well.

16. I have five guitars: Maria the lady’s acoustic; Sid the bass; Seyton the electric, [nameless 1] the ¾ acoustic; and [nameless2] the full-size acoustic. I only bought Seyton and Sid – the acoustics were all hand-me-downs.

17. I’m on YouTube, and when I go to Norway as an au pair in my Gap Year I’m going to post a video every week. On YouTube, I’m, ‘barefootfiona’. Oh, I've already shoved that in your face? Several times, you say? Sorry about that.

18. I’m agnostic i.e. I pick and choose. I want to be Wiccan or Pagan or some other occult thing because I have a boundless reverence of and love for nature and magic, but it’s expensive. You have to buy lots of books and ingredients and equipment, so I’ll do all that when I’m a grown-up.

----------------------

19. OH! I just remembered something really good I can tell you! I have four ‘guardians’: the Towfa, Kenny, Zero and Katarina.

20. Katarina I’ve had longest. She was my childhood ‘imaginary’ friend, and she went away when I left America. She came back to replace Skye (who I’d had since 2004) in 2008, because as it turns out Skye was kinda evil. Katarina’s a little older than me, taller and more gangly. She’s got long, dirty blonde hair and Germanic features. In three word, she is: still, constant and honest. She drives a golden motorbike, can fly without wings and is awesome at acrobatics.

21. Next came Kenny, shortly after I read Northern Lights – he’s my dæmon. But, like all good Mary Stue’s (If you don’t get that reference, don’t worry), he can also turn into a human. The interesting thing is that as a dæmon, he flickered in forms (lizard, buck, gerbil and sparrow were common, though not exclusive) until I was 14, when he settled completely into a reddish raccoon. I know they don’t exist, but he’s like a raccoon that’s been tinted the same colour as a red panda. As a human, he’s muscled but rather short for a guy, and exactly my age. He’s freckly and has reddish-brown hair, straight teeth and rough hands. He’s in love with me, which makes things a bit awkward seeing as he’s not ‘real’. In three words, he is: lively, happy, and reckless. He has a red motorbike which sometimes has an empty sidecar… symbolic? He can’t fly.

22. Wow, I’m really starting to sound crazy. Oh well.

23. Zero happened in 2007. I say happened, and I mean happened. I can’t really describe Zero; he’s a bit too intricate, but essentially we have a love/hate relationship where there is no real hate. His appearance is easier to describe: very tall, well-built in a toned way. His hair is silver-white with a few mint-green stripes… sometimes. He wears black and white PVC cyber-goth clothes with the same mint-green coloured piping, though it’s not pervy or anything. No matter what he’s got on, he’s always wearing a white PVC trench coat, and his arms are always bare beneath it. I can’t describe him in three words. He’s sarcastic, cold, selfish, vain, tactless, mean, vulgar, arrogant, jealous, menacing and can be a back-handed little bitch. He’s also brave, protective, kind, loyal, determined, affectionate, supportive, funny, and more deeply understanding than anyone I know, real or imaginary. Christ, it sounds like I’m in love with him. I’m not, I’ve just analysed him deeply. Oh, and he’s also irrevocably and unabashedly gay. :D I drew him (lookit the picture) He drives a silver state-of the art motorcycle, and flies with wings cause he's a flamboyant show-off. Katarina does have wings, by the way (they're honey-coloured) she just doesn't feel the need to use them. Zero's just a flashy bastard.

24. The Towfa (tao-fa) is a quick job. She appeared when Zero did, and drew together Kenny and Katarina (then Skye) to make the band of four they are today. She’s a little Russian lady (little i.e. four foot tall) and I’ve never seen her do anything but sit on her little flying carpet and frown at everyone else. I don’t think she’s either good or bad, she’s just the glue. She may be a god, I don’t know. I think she must not hate me, otherwise I wouldn’t know why she’s here. I try not to talk about her, ‘cause it’s like You-Know-Who: I don’t want to say something wrong and then regret it. She’s quite creepy. I don’t know what ‘Towfa’ means, or where it came from.

25. Other members of my entourage are: Selkie, Matti, Thewl and Thewl’s baby, Sam (they are reoccurring in my dreams, and each of the men is an embodiment of one of the three types of my perfect man – Sexy, Passionate and Stable. Sam is the son Thewl and I have, and is named after my favourite blogger); Haiweth and her horse, Rosc-Galad (an LOTR fanfiction I once wrote, and these two stuck around); Remus and Sirius (the only two which aren’t my own); codename-Merlin, who just won’t leave even though I’m ‘well over it’; and finally, Jaxon, Kelle, Daisuke and Niimura, Kiki and Terre, Mike and Charlie, and the Car Crash Angel (characters from various stories I started but never finished).

PHEW. That took me over an hour to write. Now you know the dangers of tagging me in one of these things. If you stuck ‘round till here, I swear I will write you a poem. Message me. It’ll probably be a haiku, but whatever. I promise to write you a poem.
This is Fiona, over and OUT xxx

Tomorrow I'm going to France for almsot two weeks for work experience. Excited but scared!

See you soon xxx Fiona
Snow and Firsts

I don’t care if everyone’s said it already but I LOVE SNOW!

YAY!

I’ve been allowed to miss a day, no, scratch that, two days off school, and who knows? Maybe tomorrow as well!

On to another note: Firsts. Vlogsmoothie (www.youtube.com/vlogsmoothie) have chosen a theme every week so far, and though I’ve not participated enough (yet), I’m getting the hang of it, and well record a video soon about ‘where I come from’. Soon as the rents stop having to work. But, in the interest of not backlogging too much, I’ll post my ‘firsts’ here.

Question: What was your first pet?
Answer: Honey the hamster. She died when we moved house for the nth time, when my mum accidentally left the cage door and the conservatory door open. We can only assume Honey ran into the garden and we think she was eaten by next door’s cats. When my second (and final) hamster died, I wrote a poem about her. Keep in mind, I was about 10:

Custard, Custard why did you go? And while I’m at it, where?
Are you in hamster heaven or hell or are you just anywhere?
Now you’re a ghost, who do you haunt? English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh?
And I’m sorry you’re under a plant pot; I just couldn’t find anything else.
Do you play with my old hamster Honey? Or do you hang out with a new bunch?
Oh, and by the way what do you eat – some veggies or ghost hammy munch?
Now I’ve got to go and I hope you’ll reply – I really miss you, you know!
I just wish you hadn’t died, not so long ago.

Question: What was your first dream job?
Answer: Author. And it’s still my dream job.

Question: What was your first YouTube subscription?
Answer: On my old account, which I’d had since like 2005, it must have been something like lonelygirl15. I didn’t figure out that subscribing was free for a long time, so I just used the channel for commenting and favouriting most of the time. On this channel (i.e. barefootfiona) it was probably fiveawesomegirls.

Question: What was your first Harry Potter book?
Answer: The first one, of course! My aunt sent it to me from the UK shortly after it came out, and my mum used to read it to us (my brother and myself) at bedtime.

Question: What was your first favourite book?
Answer: Northern Lights. I remember reading it and for the first time getting that feeling that grips your stomach. I was on holiday in Spain, not far from Barcelona, but I could touch the luscious fur coats in Retiring Room, I could hear John Faa’s voice strong and proud and constant in the Fens, I could smell the rusted sky iron in Stavanger, I could feel the wind and the snow whistling around Lyra in Bolvangar, I could taste the seal blubber after the fight in Svalbard… in short, the book was and is amazing. I’m also convinced that’s where my love of Scandinavia comes from.

[side note: it’s just stopped snowing (a brief respite, I’m sure) and the light right now is amazing – everything’s really colourful]

Question: What was your first favourite film?
Answer: Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring. When I was younger, my brother, my best friend Luis and I used to play at Lord of the Rings: I was Haiweth, Aragorn’s daughter (or any other elf or human or any girl whenever necessary); my brother changed his mind every five minutes, and he did it like this: I tripped. Oh, look I’m dead now. I come back as KING OF THE ROHIRRM; and finally, Luis played everyone imaginable. When I watched the film, I was blown away even though my mum forwarded through all the orc scenes because she was scared.

Question: What was your first celebrity crush?
Answer: Viggo Mortensen, and I’m not ashamed to say so. I mean, I think the fact that my first crush was on a (semi-)Dane must be symbolic.

Question: What was your first CD?
Answer: Well, it was Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition Soundtrack, but I guess my first ‘proper’ CD was Avril Lavigne’s first album, which I still think is a good album, though her later stuff is, to be frank, crap.

Question: What was your first concert?
Answer: EITHER Download Festival 2006, if that counts as concert, OR Cpaercaillie in December 2007, though that’s a Scottish folk band, OR Simple Plan in April 2008. You decide.

Question: What was the first song you wrote?
Answer: It was called ‘Girl called Skye’… and it was awful. I wrote it when I was 12 and… no, let’s not go there.

[It gets dark so fast!]

I'm getting better at this!

Google Meme
I re-did my old one. This is very funny, and was started by Hank Green of the vlogbrothers. You just enter "[your name] [verb]" into Google (e.g "Fiona needs") and lolsicles ensue! Make sure you keep the speech marks on.

PEACE! XXX

“Fiona needs"
…some help to remember what she must do.
Since my paternal grandmother passed away because she had Alzheimer’s, this is very worrying.

"Fiona looks like"
…a Russian grandmother

…an ill Russian peasant

…she has been caught in the headlights

Which is the best?

View Poll: Dressing Up like what I Look Like
</lj-poll-1342255>"Fiona [surname] says"
…Having read all the Harry [surname] books more times than I can recall, I feel that Simon Pegg would be just perfect playing Bill Weasley.
.

"Fiona says"
…goodbye to Facebook
Never left, just took ages to join because I felt sorry for Myspace.
…that studies show that the monthly travel of MEPs, staff and journalists to Strasbourg for plenary sessions produces 20000 tonnes…
Fiona’s BORING.
…by Diana Hendry
A book, apparently.

"Fiona [surname] wants"
…Justin to hurry up at work so we can go see santa!
Santa? Santa!

"Fiona wants"
…Goa police sued for botching her daughter Scarlettes murder case

“Fiona does"
…not love sweet potatoes.
Love ‘em.
…not disappoint
:D

"Fiona hates"
…the internet
That’s a lie. I love the net.
…central park
Loved it when I was there, never mind the freezingness of it all.
…Hannah Montana.
Don’t really care either way, tea bee aich.
…when people ask if they may pet her ears.
WHAT? I have never been asked this.

“Fiona [surname] hates"
Nothing came up except this:
Don't hate the player, hate the game. And hate Fiona who is on the game.
I’m on the game? First I’ve heard of it. (P.S. What is the game?)

"Fiona likes"
…it.
A good answer, I think.

"Fiona eats"
…barely anything except her own produce and claims to have been in a supermarket just twice in the last 18 months.
This sounds great. Go Fiona!
…vests every rally.
Eats vests?
… Fiona eats only vegetables – particularly romaine lettuce
This is not particularly interesting, until you add the prefixual phrase ‘As a sub-adult green turtle,’ it gets a lot better.

"Fiona wears"
I think Fiona is a Lord of the Rings Character. See below.
…my trademark of a faery sandal and has wonderful brilliant green eyes.
= Elfin Fiona
… period attire to complement the magic of yesteryear.
= Rohirrm Fiona
…corduroy trousers in a rich green with a knee patch to match her set.
= Hobbit Fiona
…The Ring
= Crazy Obsessive Murderer Fiona.

"Fiona was arrested for"
…drink driving whilst in Tinkerbell

"Fiona loves"
…her daughter maybe even more than she loved heroin
…yeah. right. That’s me all over. Teen pregnancy and druggie.

And my favourite of all…"Fiona asks"
…if the Pattern is gone completely, or simply stopped glowing.
I sound wonderfully disturbed!

Tomorrow I'll figure out how lj-cuts work, 'cause I totally haven't got it yet.

Barry 'Bama and Ellie Undone

This is copied from my blogspot, http://barefootfiona.blogspot.com

My friend Ellie (who is also starting a blog called ellieundone sometime soon) has been saying for the past week or so that I should get a blog. I’ve always liked this idea, and have tried countless times, but I thought this time I might just swing it. I also have a YouTube account of the same name, but I update it rarely because I’m quite self-conscious of recording when I’m not alone in the house (www.youtube.com/user/barefootfiona).

So I’ve been gathering a few little notes of things I can talk about. My list looks like this:
· Deer (Kill it, Cook it, Eat it)
· Song
· New glasses
· Cod
· Weebl’n’bob
· Wrock
· Trock
· Piglet squid (teacup pig?) Hispanidan Solenodon
· Norway sent NOK30mill
· Threadless
· Toyota FT-EV 2012
· Eivør Pálsdottir

I want to talk about all of them, but I in fact will keep them for another day. Instead I will recount today’s adventurifications.
Obama was inaugurated! Yay! I watched most of the speech, though I missed the beginning, so I didn’t see him actually take the oath! But, luckily, it was repeated on German TV so I watched it. It’s really exciting, though it makes you think:
How many Americans know over which country Angela Merkel presides? Which Brit knows the name of Australia’s Prime Minister? And where does Cristina Fernández de Kirchner live?

I googled the last two, which I think gives the answer.
The one New Year’s resolution I have completed so far is this: learn the capital cities of the States of the U.S.A. Go on. Ask me. Vermont? Montpelier. New Mexico? Santa Fe. Alaska? Juneau. Syria? …umm

[Of course, Damascus rings a bell, but that’s as far as it goes.]

It makes me ashamed to admit that if someone asked me anything about South Korea’s government, it would draw a blank, except for… well, no. Nothing. And I’m often pushed to even remember the President of Russia’s name – though I do know that the judo-afficionado-cum-aspiring-artist Vladimir Putin is the Prime Minister.

These are some of the things I have to work on this year.

I have high hopes for Obama and even though I know it’s inevitable for him to disappoint in some aspect (a – he can’t please everyone, and b – expectations are so high that they are impossible to meet fully), he will nevertheless be a hundred times better than Dubya ever was. As ‘leader of the Free World’ (a term which my 15-year-old brother has understandable issues with) he’s got a lot of leadin’ to do.

To finish, let me just say “thank you, God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.”

Fingers crossed.

Fiona xx

P.S. Angela Merkel is Chancellor of Germany. Australia’s Prime Minister is called Kevin Rudd. Mrs Fernández de Kirchner is the first elected female Argentinian president, and South Korea’s government, which has been a successful liberal democracy since the 1960s, is currently headed by Lee Myung-Bak. The president of the Russia Federation is Dmitry Medvedev.

It's Only a House
It’s Only a House

Today is my brother, N’s, 15th birthday, and to be honest I think I’ve been quite fair about it. Firstly I get up at an ungodly hour (well, 6:30) to sing him Happy Birthday and stuff with my family. I got him a DC Comics Character Encyclopedia, which won me: 1 (one) half hearted hug and four (4) teenaged ‘thank you’s. That was nice, I guess. Even if it was on the first day of my holidays.

Then he arrives at 5 pm with a band of ruffians who set dedicatedly to work on the one thing they can do well – destroying what was left of our dark, greenish living room. Oh well. I’m happy. This morning I read the end of New Moon and most of Eclipse, so I settle down upstairs to finish it. The Twilight Flu has got to me. Grrr… I swore to hate it! But I can’t…

Anyway, I end up turning up my relaxing music (Sigur Rós) up as high as possible to drown out the crazed warbles and raucous shouting of six pubescent boys watching Batman: The Dark Knight.

It’ll be worse when they start on the 3-disc edition of King Kong, featuring, and I quote: “The Eight Blunder of the World”.

Having moved away from the third episode in the absurdly gripping tale of Bella and her pet monsters, I turn on my computer, sharply avoid the internet (phew! I’m not quite sure why, but I think the Internet eats my time Munch munch yum yum) and shove in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I finished the game for the nth time last Saturday, and I’m now doing that fun bit where you just walk around collecting as many beans as you can, to buy pumpkin pasties, to buy passwords, to find secret chambers, where you find more beans… the circle goes on. Having given up on Harry and his comrades’ search for Beanship, I wanted to go fly Buckbeak, but having completed four of the five levels of literally jumping through hoops, I ended up being beaten by a glitch for the tenth time and realise I’m parched.

So I head downstairs, firstly to get a glass of water, and secondly to see them. This is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while, because I’ve been smelling ham in my room for about half an hour and I hate ham, so I wonder where that’s coming from.

They’re cooking for N.

Awww... awwww…. ..aww. Aw…..
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

OK, it wasn’t quite that bad.

Seriously, though, the floor is covered in water or something, there’s something red bubbling in a pan (blood, gore… tomatoes? Vampires must be getting to my brain) and I’m sure that spaghetti shouldn’t look like it’s been fried when there’s no frying pan to be seen. But whatever. I don’t care what they put in their bodies. Not until they start screaming. The really disturbing thing is that there is no ham. I get out as quick as I can.

Finally, as I am heading upstairs with a glass of water in my hand, I hear one of them say:
“Is that… burning?”
To which N’s best friend replies nonchalantly: “Don’t worry, it’s only a house.”

Merry Christmas All!

P.S. Keep an eye on your fifteen year old aspiring cooks. ;)

Personality Quiz... Gets It Right?
Before I tell you 'what I got', you may want to do the test yourself, unbiased. If you don't care, then just don't.

[link]

I clicked the purple swirly one, and got this:

Introspective, sensitive, reflective

You come to grips more frequently and thoroughly with yourself and your environment than do most people. You detest superficiality; you'd rather be alone than have to suffer through small talk. But your relationships with your friends are very strong, which gives you the inner tranquility and harmony that you require. You do not mind being alone for extended periods of time; you rarely become bored.

It's all true. I love it when that kind of thing happens!

On another note, I can't wait until Sims 3 comes out. Aaaaaaaaaah! I'm so excited!

So guess who got an A* in French after all?

Me! Oh yeah! That’s right! I’m dancin’! You can’t see me! But I’m dancin’! No, really! Believe me! I’m dancin’! Oh yeah!

Edexcel messed up loads of people’s grades in French and German, marking them with the Foundation scheme, which means you can only get a maximum lower mark… Ok, so I can’t explain how it actually works, but YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

To celebrate, I bought a bag of Worther’s Originals, and a bag of Mint Humbugs to mix up with my bag of Noémie’s Bergamot sweeties from Nancy. I also bought a bag of Haribo for my brother, N, and an apple tart for my parents, who like French tartes. I’m feeling generous!

This means that my results read like this:

FRENCH – A *s*t*a*r* :parties like a crazay dude:

English Lit – A*

English Language – A*

Science – A*

Maths – A*

Additional Science – A

RS – A

Geography – A

ICT – A

Music – B

I am verr happy…

… and the A* in German, which must not be forgetted for I am half German and hence ROCK!!!
